Raheem Mostert Fantasy Outlook

“Trade me”. OK, well Mostert requested a trade from the 49ers. However it has been reported that he has restructured his contract and will remain with the team.

Expect him to be the starter over Tevin Coleman but not by a wide margin. To make it simple, Kyle Shanahan likes having a backfield by committee.

Mostert and Tevin Coleman both had 137 carries last season. However, Mostert’s 137 carries went for 772 yards and a yards per carry average of 5.6 while Tevin Coleman had 544 yards and a 4.0 ypc average.

With that being said, even after Mostert’s 220 yard performance in the NFC Championship, Tevin Coleman started during the Super Bowl.

Yet, Mostert still had 12 carries to Coleman’s 5 in the big game. Does it make any sense? No, but obviously Mostert is producing more so expect him to have more opportunities.

The 49ers made it all the way to the Super Bowl in 2019 and their defense got a lot of credit, deservingly so. However, running the football is something else the 49ers are very good at. They were second in the league last season averaging 144 ypg on the ground.

Pros & Cons

  • Good O-line
  • Great Offensive System
  • Lead Back in 2020
  • Backfield by committee
  • Not much of a receiving threat

Credit Shanahan because he is very good at attacking opponents. The 49ers attack the defense from every angle, up the middle, off tackle or getting outside on the edges. It is also how they attack the defense at every angle.

They line up in so many different personnel groupings and different formations that it keeps the defense on their heels.

Also, they use smoke & mirrors meaning sending people in motion or trading the tight end/fullback to the other side of the formation that it is hard for the defense to anticipate where they are running the ball.

Mix in the heavy use of play action, causing receivers and George Kittle to be wide open and it is easy to see why the 49ers had the season they had in 2019. Expect to see a similar approach to 2020.

San Francisco Offensive Line 2020

Projected Starting Line: LT: Trent Williams, LG: Laken Tomlinson, C: Weston Richburg, RG: Tom Compton, RT: Mike McGlinchey

Welcome Trent Williams! The disgruntled left tackle seems very happy to be on a new team. Williams has widely been regarded by many as the best left tackle in football for several years.

Laken Tomlinson enters his fourth season with the 49ers. He has a good mix of power and athleticism.

Weston Richburg got hurt in Week 14 but will be back this season. He is one of the more underrated centers in the league.

Tom Compton joined the 49ers this offseason on a one year contract so he will need to prove himself. He is the biggest liability this starting unit has.

McGlinchey is an ascending right tackle who made the 2018 all rookie team.

It would be a disservice to not mention George Kittle and Kyle Juszcyzyk. Although not technically offensive linemen, these two are perennial pro bowlers who help open big holes to run through. This line is not at the top, but certainly one of the better blocking units in the NFL.

Raheem Mostert Strength of Schedule

49ers Schedule 2020

Mostert will have to face 5 defenses who ranked in the top 10 in 2019. He also has 5 scheduled primetime games so fantasy owners will see a lot of Mostert.

A Week 11 bye is late and probably after the trade deadline for your fantasy league. Make a decision early if you want to keep Mostert through the playoffs.

Raheem Mostert Fantasy Playoff Schedule

Week 14 is home against Washington. Week 15 and 16 away at Dallas and Arizona. Week 17 home vs Seattle. Not too bad at all.

Raheem Mostert Injury History

Mostert played all 16 last season. In 2018 he broken his forearm in Week9.

Raheem Mostert Skillset

Home Run Ability: B+. Mostert has some serious speed. He can go the distance at any moment.

Playmaking Ability: C+. Mostert can break arm tackles but really relies on his speed. Does not have much else to his game.

Is Raheem Mostert a Good Fantasy Pick?

Yes. He is not a popular pick, but look at his production from a year ago. The 49ers are going to be good at running the football again this year.
