Leonard Fournette Fantasy Outlook
Leonard Fournette had a ton of expectations after his stellar career at LSU and being selected fourth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. His rookie season, he showed that he was capable of being productive in the NFL and was a huge reason the Jaguars made the AFC Championship that season.
However, he has just as many negatives as he does positives in his short NFL career.
Fournette has yet to play a full season due to injuries as well as suspensions.
Last season was his best season. His yards per carry went from an underwhelming 3.3 in 2018 to 4.3 in 2019. Surprisingly, he was utilized a lot in the passing game, catching 76 of his 100 targets.
With that being said however, Jay Gruden is now the Offensive Coordinator after the Jaguars fired John DeFillipo. It is safe to say Gruden has never a running back as talented as Fournette because although he had Adrian Peterson in Washington, AP is certainly not the same.
Therefore, because Gruden has Fournette he should be excited to use him. He almost has no other choice because DJ Chark is the only other big time playmaker the Jaguars have.
The Jaguars were in a better rhythm at times last season. It helped having Minshew taking snaps because the Jaguars were in an offense that fit them better. With Foles, and even Bortles in the past, the Jaguars would be in shotgun too much.
Fournette was not comfortable running out of shotgun and even when they were under center the runs were so predictable. Minshew has added some of a spark to the offense by keeping them in more of a rhythm and making plays the Jaguars have not been accustomed to from the QB position.
In the passing game, Minshew was guilty of checking it down a ton to Fournette. Fournette had 7 or more catches in 4 games last season and averaged 7 yards per catch. In other words, Minshew got rid of the ball to Fournette because the offensive line did not block well, or the receivers did not get open. Either way, it equals points in fantasy football.
Overall, it is not a sexy offense. Fournette got hurt bad by some game scripts when the Jags were down, and Fournette also sees a ton of stacked boxes because defenses do not respect the Jaguars receivers.
Yet, Fournette was still productive and only scored three times! His touchdowns should go up this season just by default. Another note, it is Fournette’s contract season so expect him to try and showout.
Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Line 2020
Projected Starting Line: LT: Cam Robinson, LG: Andrew Norwell, C: Brandon Linder, RG: AJ Cann, RT: Jawaan Taylor
Robinson has not been what the Jaguars hoped. He is physical in the run game but gets caught holding. In the pass game he is a complete liability. The Jaguars might move him to guard at some point this season.
Norwell also has disappointed. After signing a huge contract in the 2018 offseason, the Jaguars need more out of him.
Linder has been good when healthy. He finally played a full season in 2019 which is a good sign.
AJ Cann is a limited athlete. He does have some power in the run game but he also gets called for holding too often.
Taylor had a good rookie season. He has traits to be a good RT.
Overall this line is not in the top half of the league. If Robinson moves to guard it could help out but the Jaguars were called for 37 holding penalties in 2019 which was the league high.
Leonard Fournette Strength of Schedule
The Jaguars face 4 teams that had top 10 defenses in 2019.
The Jaguars are the best at having 1pm EST games. They only have two games not played at 1pm EST.
A Week 7 bye is a little early for players to rest. However, at least Fournette will be available for fantasy purposes for 11 straight weeks.
Leonard Fournette Fantasy Playoff Schedule
Week 14 the Jaguars host the Titans. Week 15 and 16 are tough matchups at Baltimore and home against the Bears. Week 17 the Jaguars travel to Indianapolis.
Leonard Fournette Injury History
Fournette missed the regular season finale last season because of a neck injury. In 2018 he missed time because of a hamstring injury.
Leonard Fournette Skillset
Home Run Ability: B. Fournette does have some good speed. However, he was chased down after long runs 3 times last season.
Playmaking Ability: C. Fournette does well to fall forward and seek contact, but he does not make people miss or have a variety of moves in the open field.
Is Fournette a Good Fantasy Pick?
Surprisingly yes. He is utilized a ton! He had 349 touches last year. Only McCaffery had more touches as a running back. If he has more than 3 TDs this season, he could be a solid RB1.
