James White Fantasy Outlook
James White is the definition of a pass catching back. For several years now, White has been a viable weapon for the Patriots and 2020 will not be any different for the veteran.
Josh McDaniels is still the offensive coordinator in New England. McDaniels loves to throw screens to White and will also line him up as a receiver at times. Some games, White is flooded with targets, providing the spark for the Patriots offense.
McDaniels always seems to have a few designed routes for him and sometimes even in the red zone. His usage will either stay the same as previous years or go up.
White will have to adjust to Cam Newton rather than Brady. One of the things Brady is very good at is throwing the ball to the backs early. Most times when running backs get catches we think of them as check downs.
However, Brady understands coverages so well that he would get the ball to White so quickly allowing White plenty of time to turn up field or make a move on a defender. In some cases, it seemed as though White was Brady’s first read because Brady understood what the defense was going to give him.
Now having Cam as QB will be a different dynamic. We Have seen some of Cam and McCaffery and how effective those two were. Therefore, White’s fantasy owners should have some optimism that Cam will be able to find the versatile back out of the backfield often.
James White is technically the backup, yet he is not rivaled by Sony Michel in the pass game. White had 60 more catches than Michel in 2019.
New England Patriots Offensive Line 2020
Projected Starting Line: LT: Isaiah Wynn, LG: Joe Thuney, C: David Andrews, RG: Shaq Mason, RT: Yodny Cajuste
Isaiah Wynn missed all of 2018 and half of 2019. He needs to stay healthy in his third season.
Joe Thuney and David Andrews are pretty similar. They both are solid starters for the Patriots and provide the leadership.
Shaq Mason is a bowling ball coming off the line of scrimmage. At 6’1, he stays low and fires out on running plays. He is also a solid player.
Marcus Cannon has opted out of this season due to Covid-19. That is a huge blow for this unit because he has been with the team since 2011 and started 69 games. Yodny Cajuste was a 3rd round pick in 2019 and might be Cannon’s replacement.
Along with losing Cannon, the Patriots lose their longtime OL coach Donte Scarnecchia to retirement. Scarnecchia was a huge reason the Patriots have had the success they have. He has been apart of 5 super bowl wins with the franchise. On paper this unit takes a step back.
James White Strength of Schedule
Tough sledding. The Patriots and James White have 7 contests against defenses that finished top 10 in 2019.
If you like watching your fantasy players on primetime, James White has 5 scheduled primetime games.
A Week 6 bye is good to get out of the way early, but it forces the player to go 11 straight weeks after.
James White Fantasy Playoff Schedule
Week 14 at the Rams. Week 15 at the Dolphins. Week 16 host the Bills. Week 17 host the Jets. Not too bad.
