Clyde Edwards-Helaire Fantasy Outlook

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the first RB selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Super Bowl Champion Chiefs added a national champion to their already explosive offense.

This should be a smooth transition for Clyde Edwards-Helaire. I think the 2019 LSU Tigers and 2019 Chiefs would probably draw a lot of comparisons which might have gone into the decision in the Chiefs drafting Edwards-Helaire.

Even though the LSU offense probably had bigger names, Edwards-Helaire was very productive carrying the ball 215 times for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also added 55 receptions for 453 yards and one score.

The rich get richer. Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator, have been dissecting defenses for several years now.

Lets be honest, they are a pass first offense but are also quietly productive in the run game. As a team, they averaged 4.2 yards per carry but 16 rushing touchdowns. Teams get ready to stop Mahomes and the pass game, so the Chiefs catch teams off guard when they do run.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Great fit for offense
  • Dual threat RB
Cons
  • Rookie Adjustment Period?
  • Do Chiefs Sign Another Back?

Edwards-Helaire adds some toughness and savvy to the Chiefs backfield. He is a determined runner that is able to break tackles and fight for extra yards. A unique skill Edwards-Helaire also possesses is an uncanny ability to make defenders miss.

He is able to take advantage of those trying to tackle him by setting them up. He will run through, side step or change direction before the defender knows what hit him.

Damien Williams has opted out of this season. Fully expect Edwards-Helaire to handle the lead in this backfield. It is almost as if the Chiefs front office knew this would happen. Expect some exciting plays from the rookie.

Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Line 2020

Projected Starting Line: LT: Eric Fisher, LG: Nick Allegretti, C: Austin Reiter, RG: Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, RT: Mitchell Schwartz

The entire projected line won a super bowl with the Chiefs last season. This means they all experienced what it takes to win.

Schwartz and Eric Fisher are the most productive. Both are athletic and have good size. Fisher made the pro bowl in 2018 while Schwartz was a first team all pro in 2018 and second team all pro in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Duvernay-Tardif has been with the Chiefs six years now and started every game until last season due to injury. He is a bit less athletic than the two tackles but still an above average player with good experience.

Allegretti was a rookie last season who is expected to continue to grow. The Chiefs believe enough in him that they allowed former starter Cam Erving to leave in free agency.

Reiter is the only one who has not played for the Chiefs his whole career. He possesses some athleticism but lacks some power and strength.

All in all, the Chiefs mainly try to win in the run game by getting position and staying on blocks. They are not a physical downhill run team and they do not have to be. It is working well enough for them.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire Strength of Schedule

There are six teams who finished with a top 10 defense in 2019 that the Chiefs will face this season.

After winning a Super Bowl, the Chiefs have 5 primetime games schedule for 2020.

A week 10 bye is good for the players to rest but does not allow much time for a trade to be made in fantasy if your trade deadline has passed.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire Fantasy Playoff Schedule

Week 14 and 15 are on the road at Miami and New Orleans. Week 16 and 17 the Chiefs host the Falcons and Chargers which is one of the easier fantasy playoff schedules there is.

No major injury history in college. Missed one start last season with a hamstring injury but did play in the game.
