Austin Ekeler Fantasy Outlook

Austin Ekeler is a jitterbug. He has good burst and quickness. There is no question number 30 for the Chargers plays every play the same always going full tilt.

It seems as though he will get the lion share of touches. Melvin Gordon is gone and the Chargers did not sign anyone in free agency at RB.

They did use a fourth round pick on Josh Kelley but 4th round seems like the Chargers trust Ekeler.

I do not trust Ekeler to hold up. He is a smaller guy for the position and I believe it would be too much of a burden for him to carry the load himself.

Pros & Cons

  • Great Energy
  • Utilized as a Runner and Receiver
  • Effecient
  • Never Been the Main Guy

He did touch the ball over 200 times last season but with only 132 carries.

The Chargers made Shane Steichen interim OC midway thru the 2019 season and for 2020 they removed the interim tag. Steichen fed Ekeler the ball just as much as Ken Wisenhunt did while he was OC.

Ekeler shows great skills as a WR and that is mainly how he was involved last season splitting time with Melvin Gordon.

Ekeler is a very intriguing fantasy option. If he does hold up for all 16 games, expect a good return on investment.

Los Angeles Chargers Offensive Line 2020

Projected Starting Line: LT: Bryan Bulaga, LG: Dan Feeney, C: Mike Pouncey, RG: Trai Turner, RT: Sam Tevi

One of the better makeovers this offseason, the Chargers offensive line welcomes two big name free agents.

Bulaga and Trai Turner are two huge additions to a Chargers offensive line that last year under performed. Bulaga was a staple in Green Bay for a decade, helping the Packers win Super Bowl 45. Trai Turner has been spectacular at RG making the pro bowl each of the past 5 seasons.

Dan Feeney is a young but talented LG who was named to the 2017 all rookie team.

Mike Pouncey is an athletic center who has enjoyed a good career in the NFL.

Sam Tevi is the weak link in this unit. The RT struggles with heavy, slow feet which causes him to miss blocks at times.

The Chargers did well to upgrade this unit. It now ranks in the top half of the league.

Austin Ekeler Strength of Schedule

The Chargers have a favorable schedule and a lot of tasty matchups. Ekeler will only face 3 teams who ranked in the top 10 for total defense during 2019.

The Chargers are in the primetime spotlight only twice this season but play most of their games in the 4pm EST slate.

A week 10 bye is a good spot for Ekeler to rest up for the push into the fantasy playoffs. However, it might be past your trade deadline if you wanted to get rid of him.

Austin Ekeler Fantasy Playoff Schedule

Home against Atlanta and Denver, on the road against the Raiders and Chiefs. Ekeler’s fantasy playoff schedule is a good one.

Austin Ekeler Injury History

Ekeler suffered a neck injury in 2018 that cost him two games

Austin Ekeler Skillset

Home Run Ability: B. Ekeler can go the distance. He had an 84 yard touchdown against Jacksonville last season that was an exciting play.

Playmaking Ability: B+. Do not sleep on Ekeler. His effort is unlike most.

Is Austin Ekeler a Good Fantasy Pick?

No. If there is one player that might make me eat my words it is Ekeler.. but it scares me he has never had a full workload.
